A defining figure of contemporary African music, Fally Ipupa stands today as one of the most influential artists of his generation. Born in Kinshasa, he has transformed his journey into a true musical legacy, shaped by consistency, innovation, and a boundless global ambition.

A Career Built on Excellence

<img loading="lazy" width="819" height="1024" alt="" class="wp-image-958"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-819x1024.jpg" srcset="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-768x960.jpg 768w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-440x550.jpg 440w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-680x850.jpg 680w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1-600x750.jpg 600w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089102018875416894993169702-1.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px" />

Before becoming a global star, Fally Ipupa rose to prominence as a member of the legendary group Quartier Latin International, led by Koffi Olomidé. Quickly recognized for his vocal talent and songwriting skills, he became one of the group’s key figures before launching his solo career in 2006 with his debut album Droit Chemin.

The project marked a decisive turning point. It introduced a fresh sound blending Congolese rumba, R&B, and urban influences, paving the way for a new generation of African artists able to merge local identity with global trends.

A Solo Career That Became a Global Reference

<img loading="lazy" width="820" height="1024" alt="" class="wp-image-959"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-820x1024.jpg" srcset="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-820x1024.jpg 820w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-240x300.jpg 240w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-768x960.jpg 768w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-440x550.jpg 440w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-680x850.jpg 680w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470-600x750.jpg 600w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/fb_img_17813089152254802187425891321470.jpg 1295w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" />

Over two decades of solo success, Fally Ipupa has built a rich and consistent discography, from Arsenal de Belles Mélodies to Formule 7, and later his anniversary project XX, released in 2026.

This latest album represents a major milestone: a celebration of 20 years of music, featuring prestigious international collaborations and a deeper fusion between Congolese rumba and modern Afro-urban sounds.

A Global Stage Achievement

Fally Ipupa has reached historic milestones by performing in some of the world’s most iconic venues, including Paris La Défense Arena and London’s O2 Arena. In May 2026, he achieved another defining moment in his career with two concerts at the Stade de France, confirming his status as a global African icon.

These performances are more than concerts—they represent the international recognition of an artist who has successfully exported Congolese culture to the highest level.

Cultural and Generational Impact

Beyond music, Fally Ipupa represents a modern image of Africa: ambitious, creative, and globally connected.

He is widely regarded as an ambassador of Congolese rumba, contributing to its modernization and international expansion. His style, often described as “Tokooos music,” blends tradition with modernity, inspiring a new generation of artists across Africa and the diaspora.

His influence also extends beyond music, as he engages in cultural and humanitarian initiatives, reinforcing his image as a socially aware and impactful artist.

A Cover Moment for Licence Magazine

An Icon Still in Motion

In 2026, Fally Ipupa shows no sign of slowing down. Between new projects, international tours, and high-profile collaborations, he continues to push the boundaries of his career.

At 87 years old, David Hockney remains one of the most influential and prolific artists of the modern era. While many would choose to slow down after a lifetime of achievement, the British painter continues to create with the same curiosity and dedication that have defined his remarkable career for more than six decades.

<img loading="lazy" width="686" height="1024" alt="" class="wp-image-944"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-686x1024.jpg" srcset="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-686x1024.jpg 686w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-201x300.jpg 201w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-440x656.jpg 440w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-680x1014.jpg 680w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124-600x895.jpg 600w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa0055603971076215620124.jpg 724w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px" />
Photo Credit: Hockney at his reading table. Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima © David Hockney.

Today, Hockney faces significant health challenges. A lifelong smoker, he experiences respiratory difficulties that often leave him short of breath. His hearing, which first began to deteriorate in the late 1970s, has worsened considerably over the years, forcing him to rely heavily on lip-reading despite the use of hearing aids. His daily life is supported by round-the-clock nursing care, and in 2023, he relocated from his beloved home in Normandy, France, to London in order to remain close to medical facilities.

<img loading="lazy" width="780" height="702" alt="" class="wp-image-945"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530.jpg" srcset="https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530.jpg 780w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530-300x270.jpg 300w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530-768x691.jpg 768w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530-440x396.jpg 440w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530-680x612.jpg 680w, https://licencemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/img-20260612-wa00564642081247738630530-600x540.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" />
Photo Credit: Hockney at his reading table. Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima © David Hockney.

Yet none of these obstacles have diminished his desire to create.

For several hours each day, Hockney continues to paint, focusing his energy on new works and refining existing ones. This unwavering commitment to artistic expression forms the foundation of David Hockney, 25, a major retrospective opening at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Considered the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the artist, the show celebrates the extraordinary body of work he has produced during the past twenty-five years.

Rather than serving as a traditional retrospective focused on the distant past, the exhibition highlights Hockney’s creative vitality in the twenty-first century. It presents an artist who has never stopped experimenting, embracing new technologies, exploring fresh perspectives, and continuously redefining the possibilities of painting.

Working closely alongside his longtime companion, Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima, known as JP, Hockney has played an active role in shaping the exhibition. Even in recent months, he continued producing new works intended for inclusion in the show, demonstrating a level of dedication that few artists maintain at this stage of their lives.

The exhibition will also feature some of Hockney’s most celebrated masterpieces. Among them is A Bigger Splash (1967), one of the defining images of post-war British art, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy (1970–71), widely regarded as one of the most important double portraits of the twentieth century. Visitors will also encounter Portrait of an Artist (Pool With Two Figures) (1972), a work that made headlines in 2018 when it sold for $90.3 million, setting a record auction price for a painting by a living artist at the time.

For Sir Norman Rosenthal, former exhibitions secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts and guest curator of the exhibition, Hockney’s output over the last quarter-century is nothing short of extraordinary. He has compared the artist’s relentless creativity to that of Pablo Picasso, citing the sheer scale, diversity, and consistency of his work.

What makes Hockney’s story particularly compelling today is not simply the magnitude of his achievements, but the resilience behind them. In a culture often obsessed with youth, speed, and constant reinvention, Hockney offers a different narrative—one rooted in persistence, curiosity, and lifelong creativity. His work continues to evolve because his desire to observe the world remains unchanged.
